To Stand…

In “The Christian in Complete Armour”, William Gurnall gives us an in-depth look at spiritual warfare. He spends some 1,500 pages unpacking Ephesians 6:10-20, expounding its text, discussing its implications, and giving some practical direction. In the first volume, he focuses on verses 10-13:

“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” (Ephesians 6:10-13)

Finally, My Brethren…

This is addressed to my brethren (i.e., to Christians at the church in Ephesus… and recorded in scripture for all Christians of all time). In other words, if you are a Christian, you will experience spiritual warfare. There is no escaping it. The “evil day” will come. It’s only a matter of time. It comes in various packages, facades, seasons, and circumstances…

  • The temptation to give in to sensuality or lustful pleasures
  • The enticement toward bitterness and unforgiveness toward a brother or sister
  • The itch for independence from all accountability (i.e., at church, at work)
  • The urge to doubt God’s goodness in the midst of physical pain or health issues
  • The appeal of self-pity in the face of unreciprocated love or care
  • The lure toward anger while enduring persecution or injustice
  • The attractiveness of the world (i.e., its comforts, its entertainment, its ease, its pleasures)
  • The inclination to fear when we stand on the precipice of death

Whatever “evil day” comes upon you, Satan has one goal in mind… that you fall

The Power of His Might…

Anyone who thinks they can stand against the devil, against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of darkness, and against spiritual hosts of wickedness… in their own strength… is a fool. Pride comes before a fall. We need help… a lot of help. And for any born-again Christian, that help has been given to us in the indwelling Holy Spirit (John 14:16-17, John 14:26-27, John 15:26-27, John 16:13-14). In other words, God’s Spirit inside us… is the “power of His might…”

“You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” (1 John 4:4)

But how are we availing ourselves of His Spirit… when the “evil day” comes upon us? Are we surrendering to His battle plan, His tactics, His principles, and His commands?

Having Done All…

In verse 13 the Apostle Paul repeats verse 11, exhorting us once again to “put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand…” However, he ends verse 13 with an addendum, “and having done all, to stand.” Though we can only remain standing “in the power of His might”, it is also expected that we have “done all, to stand.” In other words, God won’t do for us, what we won’t do for ourselves…

I think this is where most of us fail. We expect God to do His part. But we aren’t willing to do our part. And notice our part… We are to have done “all”… not “some”, not “most”, but “all”.

Christian, are we doing all we can… to stand?

  • Are we looking daily into the truth of God’s word?
  • Are we living righteously according to all He says?
  • Are we going out with good news of His peace?
  • Are we trusting Him in the trials that we go through?
  • Are we secure in the promises He’s made to us, to deliver us?
  • Are we rightly applying His word in every situation?

These are just a few ways we can be ready. For more on this subject, see “The Christian in Complete Armour” below. The “evil day” is coming for each of us. May we be found “having done all… to stand…”

Burning Dog Radio – STREAMING ONLINE

Since Burning Dog Radio started streaming online in March 2021, the Menomonie crew is not the only radio crew anymore! Both the Duluth/Superior and the River Falls ministries are able to serve at the station since the station is worldwide! If you listen to the station regularly, that’s why you might have heard some less-familiar “radio voices!” It’s so awesome that we can all share BDR as our own station now.

We have been advertising by billboards, buses, posters, social media ads, and selling merch in the Blind Munchies Coffeehouse.

This is Church? billboard from this year – promoting Believers City Church and the station.

Pray for the new locations and their servants and the listeners in those areas – that God would use our station in their lives to bring them closer to Him.

Who is listening?

We have been tracking the listeners of our station since we started to stream, which is really encouraging. We can’t track who listens through the radio frequency, but the stream does make the station more accessible for people to listen anywhere.

Since March first, we have had….

  • 3,318 individual listeners listen for…
  • 2,102 hours.

Praise God! Please pray for all of these people. Many are not local to Menomonie, Duluth, and River Falls. Some are in other states in the USA, others are across the pond(s) in Ireland, China, Russia, Spain, Germany, and more.

Community & College Broadcasts

Over the summer, we were fortunate to broadcast at some community events!

Menomonie broadcasted the Music Over Menomin concert at the public library on July 1st when Good Morning Bedlam played. It was a great turnout and we hope to do it again next summer.

We also got to join the fun of National Night Out on August 3rd. We met a lot of people and had a great time being a part of it.

River Falls was able to broadcast live from Music in the Park at Veterans Park alongside the Blind Munchies Coffeehouse serving coffee.

The Duluth/Superior crew had their first live broadcast on Sept. 20th promoting Twin Ports Street Level Ministries on the UW-Superior college campus! They were able to meet a lot of people and did a raffle for prizes from companies around Superior.

Please pray for these in-person efforts, as the devil loves to mess with technology… Pray for us to keep Jesus central and not the technology…our station is pretty cool, but God is WAY cooler!

Believers Campus Church Broadcast

Believers Campus Church

Since the launch of the campus church plant at the Street Level House this past month, Burning Dog Radio has been broadcasting the service of Pastor Ben teaching at Believers Campus Church. This broadcast takes place on Wednesdays right after Pastor Tim’s Wednesday Rewind at Believers City Church. All the broadcasts have sounded good and we are so thankful we can do this, and fairly easily.

Prayers

Thank you for your prayers and support (sharing, merch, sharing, posters etc) with this new endeavor. Please pray for our listeners and us as we continue this year!

Getting Started

Street Level has started back up for the Fall, 2020 semester! The UW-Stout students returned to on Labor Day weekend, with classes beginning last week. Street Level welcomed returning students back to Menomonie with a backyard hangout at the Street Level House.

New Location

This fall we have a new location and time for our weekly meeting on Monday night. We will gather weekly at 5pm in The Commons (Elk Creek Room) for on-campus prayer. The plan is to read a short devotional together and spend time praying for our classmates, the campus, and other current needs.

We have also been invited to join The Blind Munchies for a weekly college dinner and bible discussion. The dinner is free and begins at 6pm. The bible discussion will follow at 7pm. All college students are welcome!

Pressing On

The rules of engagement may have changed. But our goal is the same: to build God’s kingdom through discipleship of university students at Stout.

Street Level provides opportunities for college students to serve God in through our varied ministry outlets. You can become a member of Street Level and begin serving God in our magazine, radio station, coffeehouse, or creative team. We also go on retreats, mission trips, etc. We have a discipleship house. And we are supported by a great church.

God wants you to grow in your Christian faith. Even during your time in college.

DISCOVERY

In a recent discussion in the School Discipleship, we were engaged in a conversation about the apostle Peter and his “commitment issues”. No doubt, Peter’s story is an insightful one to us. He walked with Jesus and was taught by him. Peter walked on water when the Lord called him out of the boat. He even stood in the very presence of a radiantly transfigured Jesus. But in the modern church age we often quip about Peter like he was some idiot. You know the stories… He pulled Jesus aside and rebuked him for talking about being arrested and killed (Matt. 16:22). Also, when Jesus was humbly washing the feet of the disciples, Peter proudly shut Jesus down, “You shall NEVER wash my feet!” (John 13:6-8) Even in the book of Acts, he was experiencing a vision from God and promptly said “No Thanks!” to the command God was giving him (Acts 10:13-14).

Now, before we get too judgmental about Peter, anyone out there want to put their ministerial life up against his? Nah, I didn’t think so. Peter indeed had his failures, but his life tells a different tale.

People today seem to be mostly committed to themselves. It’s kind of ugly and it’s not the way of the Christian

OBSERVATION

Commitment is often a curiously absent characteristic in the modern age. People don’t remain committed to really much except to their own lusts, desires, comforts and personal well-being (or perhaps their favorite sports team). I am awestruck when I legitimately see it today. I see it in many members of the military, for sure. Negatively, I have seen it in religious radicals, too (suicide bombers, etc.). Do you know that people used to be commonly more committed to things like their jobs, spouses, family members, or even good causes? People today seem to be mostly committed to themselves. It’s kind of ugly and it’s not the way of the Christian.

An element that came out of our discussion was something I found quite revealing. For all of Peter’s “commitment issues” in those three stories (and others), we must admit Peter was still a great servant of God, full of the spirit of God, and a fighter for the Kingdom of God. Looking at his life, no one can argue, Peter was a clear representation of a “Christian” by the strictest definition. With that said, I’d like to point your attention to the common thread in these three stories about Peter. The common thread is that Peter was engaged with God and God with Peter. Even though foolishly sometimes, Peter was clearly in relationship with God.

It could even be argued that in each of the stories, Peter had sincere motives for telling God “no!” With his rebuke of Jesus, maybe Peter did not want to see Jesus die perhaps because he thought if Jesus died it would mean the end of what he had left his old life for.  With his rejecting Jesus’ foot washing, maybe he thought so highly of Jesus that perhaps the idea of foot-washing should have been beneath Jesus. And finally with the command in the vision from God to kill and eat unclean animals, what if Peter was trying to honor what he had learned of the law of God? This is just conjecture but, in each story, there is at least a commitment (albeit misguided) to Jesus’ life, Jesus’ honor or God’s law. This is a far cry from what is seen today.

APPLICATION

Today’s church-goer (maybe you) looks at “commitment” and says, “Commitment means I go to church and read my devotions and say my prayers… believe in God. Non-commitment means I skip church, miss my bible readings, and neglect my prayers.” There are problems with these definitions. The first question I would ask you is, “Why do you do such things (church attendance, devotions, and prayers)?” My guess would be that, while you might never say it out loud, you hope that by your good committed behavior, you’ll get something from God. That is, by definition, “manipulation”. [Manipulation: 1. controlling someone or something to your own advantage, often unfairly or dishonestly. –Cambridge Dictionary]

So, perhaps you have created a list of things you believe will make you “acceptable” in the sight of God, and therefore “committing” to do those things should grant you God’s favor; eternal life. God is not blind, stupid, or gullible. He calls false motives out from a thousand miles away. Honestly, that type of life is far from the commitment of Peter or of the scriptures. The reality is, living that way is not actually commitment but compliance; a compliance that is ineffective with God and is not effectual… empty.

Commitment is liberty and compliance is legalism

So, I leave you with these definitions and a question:

Commitment: 1. The state or quality of being dedicated to a cause, activity, etc.

Compliant: 1. Disposed to agree with others or obey rules, especially to an excessive degree; acquiescent.

Question: Which one describes your Christian life? …Are you a person behind the cause or one who seeks to fulfill his quota?
