September 10, 2024 Believers Church Duluth

In Duluth, we sure love summer…but we love each other more. The last few months provided great opportunity for fellowship. On Sundays we’ve been learning about the building of the church in the book of Acts, and it’s given many parallels to the growth of our rag-tag group. Keep scrolling for just a few examples of what we’re thankful for lately.

Young Adult Hike

In early June our young adult group hiked ten miles that concluded in Jay Cooke State Park. It built comradery and character, similar to adventures written by Tolkein himself. We didn’t get lost, thanks to the trusty map, and all of us were still smiling at the end.

Park Point Rummage Sale

Duluth’s Park Point neighborhood hosts a two-day, miles-long rummage sale event at the beginning of each summer. We brought the coffee trailer for both days, met the community, and fueled them for bargain shopping. This opportunity accomplishes so much in a short amount of time: we get to work shoulder-to-shoulder, meet new people, and raise money for missions. No wonder why we look forward to it every year.

Annual All-Church Bike Ride

In July, we took our annual bike ride. We began in West Duluth at the church and rode all the way to Lester Park on the east side of town, a little over 20 miles roundtrip. There were a few scrapes, a flat tire, and a little bit of rain, but they did not detract from a great time.

Walking + Working

We took advantage of the beautiful weather as often as we could. This included fireworks, walking for ice cream, and a handful of Sunday evenings at Gordy’s restaurant in Cloquet. As we moved into August, we started working on our ‘back-to-school’ plans at the local college campuses. There is a lot in store, and we are looking forward to welcoming new and returning students.

All-Church Campout

The end of the summer concluded with the infamous all-church campout where we joined the Menomonie and River Falls groups for a family reunion of sorts. We are blessed beyond measure to spend time with them camping, laughing, and eating…lots of eating…oh and walking, too. After a weekend like this, we are ready to hit the ground running in our local community.

We are excited for what God has in store for us, knowing there are both ups and downs to navigate. We have a lot to be thankful for and, boy, does it show.

Teamwork

The first team since COVID began arrived at the beginning of August. We held three Ministry Training Institute classes for pastors and church leaders, a Street Level Summit for college students, a Youth Summit, attended a regional pastors meeting in Cebu City, worked on updates to the office, and installed our fourth cable TV station. We’ve made a lot of new ministry contacts and caught up with old friends. We’re thankful for all the time spent with the team. Please pray that the team’s work would have a major impact on the lives of whom we ministered to!

Street Level Ministries

In August, we released Issue 90 of Word on the Street Magazine! It was finished just in time for our ventures around the island, so we distributed copies to a lot of young people and their pastors. Both branches of SLM had members of the team join for a Friday night meeting. At the SLM Summit, a few members went live on Street Level Radio in between sessions. As students return to classes, we plan to get out on the streets with WOTS distribution and remote broadcasts next month. Please pray for students to hear about SLM and get connected.

Exploring Creation Science

At the beginning of August, the school administrator from Banawa Nazarene School stopped by for a short visit. Before we leave a visit to Southern Bethany has been planned along with a chance to catch up with students at a youth event. Exploring Creation Science lessons were part of the Shofar TV content update and new station installation when we traveled with the team. They will begin playing this Saturday. Tuesday marked the return to the classroom for many students since COVID began. All of the schools we work with will begin limited in-person classes on September 5. Schools have begun though with orientation for parents. We are looking forward to getting back in the classroom when we return next month!

Shofar Youth Network

At the end of July, the Inayawan Church of the Nazarene celebrated the 9th Anniversary of their 3D JAM (Jesus And Me). This is an event where they invite youth from other churches and the community to gather for worship, a short teaching, food, and fellowship. Their goal is to encourage the youth to pursue a strong relationship with Jesus and connect to a local church where they can grow. Through the Shofar Youth Network, we were able to help sponsor the event and shared a little bit about the youth network with those who attended.

Street Level Ministries

It has not been hard to enjoy great weather and outdoor adventures this summer with Street Level. We’ve sought to make the best of it all with hikes, grill-outs, and outdoor Bible studies. But we know this phase of the year will be over soon, and there are lots of changes in play. School starts just around the corner (9/1), and we are excited to start connecting with new students. Please pray for new and worthwhile relationships to be made this fall.

Believers Campus Church

The biggest change for the Fall is the creation of “Believers Campus Church”. After much discussion and preparation, this new inception of the ministry will take the place of our usual Wednesday Rewinds in River Falls. Believers Campus Church will operate as a church outreach directly on the UW-River Falls Campus. We have a room set up in the most centralized and frequented campus building, the University Center. Thus students will not need to travel far to find us, and hopefully, we are hard to miss! Please pray that the final preparations for this venture fall into place and that God’s Spirit uses it to minister to the campus.

Getting the Word Out

We have invested a great deal of time, energy, and resources into getting the word out about the ministry for this Fall. We recently spent a night labeling postcards that will be sent to about 1200 freshmen. These postcards advertise Street Level and the Campus Church and also act as a coupon for the coffeehouse. We will also soon be mailing out the most recent Word on the Street magazine when it is complete. There has been plenty to do with designing banners, printing posters, creating social media, and imagining a semester with fewer COVID restrictions (God willing). Please pray that we are visible to each student as we get the word out!

April 28, 2021 The Homeschool Ministry

When I first started thinking about homeschooling and how it would look for our family, I knew core subjects, like math and language arts would be covered.  I knew we would be doing science experiments in the kitchen and studying maps hanging on the wall.  However, one area I did not really think about was P.E.  I mean, kids run around a lot, does that count?

Over the past year, I have come to the realization that physical education is more important than what I originally thought.  If we, as parents, want our kids to be used by God in the greatest way as adults, we need to train them physically as well as spiritually and academically.  I feel that we as homeschoolers, are in the best position to do this because we can build it into our daily family life in ways that work for us.

Consistency in any area in a child’s life will greatly affect his or her life patterns as an adult.  With that in mind, think of how a daily exercise routine now could affect a lifetime of physical fitness.  Spending time on activities that your family enjoys will keep your child motivated to be physically active, even into adulthood.

If you would like further information on why P.E. is important and how to make it apart of your family’s life, here is an article from a homeschool blogger that can help you get started.

January 28, 2021 Street Level College Ministries

As with many, 2020 brought joys and challenges to Street Level, looking back over the last year of Street Level as we move into 2021- I think we can truly say that it’s been a wild ride. The fall semester brought it’s own need for creative solutions, which we are learning from the pandemic (and it might be a good thing). We moved into the Blind Munchies Coffeehouse due to campus restrictions. We wondered if anyone new would still come with the change in venue, the approach and the restrictions, and they did!

Throughout the semester we have been holding an official on campus “meeting” which every Monday at 5pm the Student Leaders have been going through the book “Don’t Follow Your Heart” by Jon Bloom and then praying with the students who come week to week. Afterwards, they come over to the Blind Munchies to join the “Blind Munchies Bible Discussion” hosted by the Blind Munchies Coffeehouse. This allows the opportunity to still offer a free dinner and to get to know the students that come week to week.

Over the fall semester three students began serving in the radio and coffeehouse ministries and became official members of Street Level. With the new normal of video calls we were even able to join up with our sister branches in the Philippines and Superior as they joined our regular meeting and then even split off into small groups with us! River Falls also came and joined us for our last night of the semester in person.

New Year’s Day, A new tradition?

More recently we took a two week break from our regular meeting so we could enjoy a New Year’s Day Jeopardy hang out at the Blind Munchies Coffeehouse. We learned Street Level history (although some of our more tenured members couldn’t even answer some of the questions), drank coffee and enjoyed what seemed like a long time since we just hung out and were together in fellowship.

In early January, three of our Student leaders joined up with Superior and River Falls’ student leaders for a day retreat. Focusing on the topic of Disciple Making at the Street Level garage in Superior. It was pleasantly surprising how mild the temperatures were in the Great North, but it was an even better day of sharing what each campus has been learning since the start of the pandemic and how to continue the mission despite the circumstances.

What’s Next?

The last few weeks before the semester began again on Jan 25th, we hit pause from the normal course of materials on Monday nights to read blog articles and discuss as a large group with our Superior friends joining us virtually.

We are looking forward to what God is going to do with the next semester- crazy to think that we are nearly a year into the pandemic, but God’s been faithful and we have been ready to move accordingly to what he wants. Pray for new students, outreach opportunities to campus and also for those that are in our group to desire discipleship.

January 7, 2021 JFB Books and Media

Discipling your family can feel like an intimidating task, but it doesn’t need to be overwhelming or complicated. With a simple plan in place, discipleship is something every parent can do.

Pastors Matt Chandler and Adam Griffin have made it their mission to help you develop a sustainable rhythm of gospel-centered discipleship focused in three key areas: time, moments, and milestones. Filled with suggestions, sample plans, and Scripture references, this book begins with the end in mind—equipping you to create a unique plan for your family as you raise your children in the love and fear of the Lord.

“What an insightful, helpful book! I love the fresh yet thoroughly biblical approach to family discipleship. The emphasis on discipling your family through time (daily, ongoing practices), moments (unplanned, spontaneous occasions), and milestones (special events) will enable you to see more clearly how to bring the gospel into all of life. I’ve never read a book on this subject with so many practical suggestions for bringing a Christian influence on your children from their birth to the end of their days (and long after you are in heaven). Begin reading this book and I think you’ll find, like I did, that it starts strong and gets better with every chapter.”
