Plant Sale

School starting up again meant for a busy season for the college ministry. We strategized a variety of outreaches and means by which to connect with the campus. This semester we hosted something that we’ve been planning to do for a quite while: a plant sale at the coffeehouse.

“Plant donations” came in from people at the Menomonie church and by the time we were ready, we had over 100 plants distributed throughout the coffeehouse. We heavily advertised the sale to the students and were happy to see the outcome many new people stopping in. Aside from finding some new decor for their dorms, they also got to see the coffeehouse and get some information about Street Level. It was nice to see so many people hanging out and having conversations in our space!

Getting Out

The college group recently joined Street Level Twin Ports in Menomonie for a fun weekend of fellowship. Friday night, we played games at the Street Level house and heard a few people share what God has been doing in their lives and on their campuses. The next day we all met at the Blind Munchies coffeehouse for a hearty breakfast before heading out to the ice to fight it out in broom ball.

Writers from Word on the Street Magazine recently joined together in Duluth for a great weekend to focus on the magazine. We worked together on the topic of “who is our audience?” in addition to launching into our next issue. The highlight of the weekend was a creative writing workshop with a professional writer. She took us through extremely helpful writing and thinking exercises that we can use to boost our skills.

Please Pray…

  1. For growing desire for discipleship in the hearts of the students.
  2. For discernment and wisdom as we make plans the rest of the semester in Street Level.
  3. As we continue to outreach and advertise for the church plant, that we’d be able to present a clear message about who we are.

The Beginning of a New Year

It’s the beginning of a new year and we are looking forward to what God has in store for us. He has introduced us to many different people and brought us to many different places throughout our time here. We have now been spending a lot of time praying and planning for the year ahead.

Street Level Ministries UW River Falls

The students will be returning to the campus in a few short weeks after their winter break. We had the opportunity to meet over the break with the Street Level officers and plan some outreaches and events for the semester. We are hoping to do some tables on campus, a plant sale, broomball with Menomonie and Twin Ports Street Level, and more.

Community Outreaches

We have been using the extra time we have had with the students gone to do some planning, make improvements to the coffeehouse, and do some outreaches in the community. One of the grocery stores in town let us set up a table and serve free coffee. Although there was a bit of a blizzard outside we were able to talk to a decent number of people 🙂 Welcome to Wisconsin winters!

On Sunday evenings we continue to meet for a Bible Study and a meal. We will be finishing up 2 Corinthians soon, and are looking forward to what is next! (I am currently not privy to this knowledge.)

Prayer Requests

  • That the students as they return will come back engaged, and continue to grow in God
  • That we will continue to meet new people and students in the community
  • God’s continued leading in the ministry

Street Level Ministries UW River Falls

The semester finished out this week with a Christmas party. It was a chance for the students to have fun and fellowship during a week of finals. We participated in worship, bingo, and Matt from Duluth joined us and lead us in a short devotional.

The majority of the students that are a part of Street Level go home for winter break, so we will not be meeting for the next few weeks. January 28th is when our first meeting of second semester will begin.

Sunday Bible Study

On Sundays, we continue going through the book of 2 Corinthians discussing things like what Godly regret is and being generous with what God has given us.

Some other things we did included a holiday pot luck, and Brittany and Laura joined us for one of the studies while back visiting from the Philippines. We hope to do some community outreaches during the next month.

Third Place Study

This has been the month of fellowship with pot lucks and parties. We also had our Third Place holiday pot luck at the coffeehouse. There were a number of people that joined us from the community. We even met some new people.

The Blind Munchies Coffeehouse

This month in the coffeehouse we started serving our new winter drink special the pistachio mocha and hot chocolate. We also have had some additional merchandise that was carried back with the last missions team available. We continue to have regular customers and meet new people.

Prayer Requests

  • As the students spend their time at home for the holidays, that they continue forward with their walk with God.
  • Possible community outreaches over winter break.
  • For God’s continued leading in the ministry as we go into the new year.

Street Level College Ministry

Street Level recently sent out magazine sent out about 1000 Word on the Street magazines to freshmen students. It was a lot of work, but everyone stepped up to the task. We hope and trust that God is using our efforts and that some students out there are discovering who we are through the magazine. We also just began printing our most recent issue, which will be distributed throughout River Falls over the next week or so.

A few students from Street Level are going to join with the Menomonie group for an outing in the Cities. The plan is to hang out at a coffeehouse called Mug Shots, which is a ministry of a local college. It’s always good to connect with the other Street Level groups and get out of the norms of River Falls.

Only a few weeks remain for the semester. It always seems to go fast, with limited time to do the privileged work of doing our best to disciple the people God brings us. Every time the semester ends, it reminds us that time is limited to do the work.

Believers Church Plant

We are in 2 Corinthians on Sundays at the Believers church plant. In the studies, we’ve discussed a lot of extreme highs and lows of following Jesus: joys and successes, as well as great trials and difficulties. We’ll be pausing soon for a night of discussing the international mission endeavors of Believers church.

Some people from the Menomonie Creative Team recently came to shoot some video of our Sunday gathering. Creative Team is putting together a new video ad showing a little of who we are and what we are about. Soon it will be pushed out via online channels to continue getting the word out.

Blind Munchies

The Blind Munchies coffeehouse in River Falls has continued to stay open three days a week this semester. Part of the goal of the coffeehouse arm of the River Falls ministry is, of course, to get to know the community. Many of the volunteers who serve have been able to get to know some “regular” customers. We pray that some of these relationships will parlay into further connection with the larger ministry.

We like to keep elements of the coffeehouse changing from season to season. We’ll soon offer a pistachio mocha for a limited time. Additionally, we will soon be reworking our merchandise area to house some new things that the recent missions trip brought back.

Prayer

  • As finals and holidays approach, pray that there would be continued engagement, this is often a time when people become needlessly distracted.
  • We inquiring about new locations for Word on the Street Magazines, pray for open doors.
  • Pray for the advertising in all forms – that we are effectively getting the word out about the ministry.

Street Level

Since you last heard from us, Street Level went on a trail walk and on a retreat. At the end of September, we had the opportunity to hang out and enjoy the colors of fall on one of the beautiful trails in River Falls. Then, last weekend we piled into two vehicles and made our way up to Duluth for a retreat with three locations (Menomonie, Twin Ports, and River Falls). Getting together was a great opportunity for us to fellowship with all of the groups, and to go through a video series discussing the presence of God in our lives.

We also just finished up preparing and stickering almost 1000 Word on The Street Magazines that we will be mailing out to the freshman on campus. These should be mailed soon, and we pray that there will be kingdom fruit from it.

On Tuesday nights we continue going through a video series and the book of Joshua. We have been learning what it looks like to follow God and put our trust in Him.

Sunday Bible Study

On Sundays, we just finished up the book of 1 Corinthians. During these studies, we discussed some challenging topics and will continue into 2 Corinthians. After our studies, we have been grilling out (which we hope to do for as long as we can with the nice weather). One Sunday we even had the opportunity to grill some Indian style chicken.

The Cat

We also had a stray cat that had been hanging out with us for the past month or so. We named him Byron / Scraggles and were trying to find a home for him. He even brought in a few people to the coffeehouse because they saw him outside. Last week he was able to find a home!

Prayer Requests

  • The people coming to Street Level and the Sunday Study will grow in their relationship and calling with God.
  • The Word on the Street Magazines will be effective for the Kingdom of God.
  • We will continue to meet people and have good conversations with people stopping in the coffeehouse.

Street Level Begins Again

Street Level has begun again in River Falls. This has meant for a busy few weeks of ministry, a steady diet of prayer, and the ability to see God do his work. We’ve had involvement fairs, various information tables, mobile coffee cart outreaches, bonfires on campus all in prayerful intent of meeting students that God may be bringing our way. We have been thankful to see some of these efforts being used to bring about conversations with students about school, life, and God. There has been a lot of interest in Street Level this year, not just from new freshman, but from people who have been around awhile and have heard about us.

Our weekly Bible study is back on track Tuesday nights, and for the first two meetings, we had a full house of interested people. We started this semester off with a video-driven discussion that asks questions about the nature of life then and seeks to answer those questions via scripture. There was a good discussion and seems to be several people who are “thinking things through” in relation to scripture. We will be flip-flopping these video discussions with a short study in the book of Joshua looking at what it means to step forward in obedience to God.

Coffeehouse Continued

The coffeehouse has been open for over a month now. We had “extended hours” for the first two weeks of school and had the opportunity to meet a lot of new people from the community and campus. Many are curious about who we are and we’ve had many discussion about our history and Menomonie origins. Some students have already become “regulars” who have their favorite drinks and use it as a study spot. We’re glad to see the place getting used so much these days, and look forward to what opportunities God may use it for.

Prayer

Please pray for:

  • The connections and opportunities with new students.
  • The students who desire to step forward to be a member of Street Level.
  • The coffeehouse and our interactions with people who stop in.

October Schedule

  • Sundays: 5pm / JFBelievers Bible Study, 6pm / meal
  • Tuesdays: 6:30pm / Street Level Meal, 7:00pm / Study
  • October 11-12: Street Level Retreat
