Street Level Ministries

What a crazy semester it has been! It’s hard to believe it’s almost December and students will be dispersing for Christmas break. Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen some new faces at both Street Level Cebu and Toledo meetings. Most of them have come because they’ve been invited by a friend or classmate.

Some students have been distributing copies of Word on the Street Magazine, which has been challenging and exciting… challenging to be denied or ignored, but exciting when students engage in conversation! Even if they don’t attend a meeting immediately, at least there’s the point of contact. Who knows… maybe they’ll come next semester.

If you remember from a previous update, we held a remote radio broadcast at our new Street Level Radio sponsor. That day, we collected contact info from 60 students for a raffle. Five of them claimed their prizes, which allowed us to meet them again and invite them to SLM. All of them claimed their free meals at our sponsors’ eatery 😊

It’s a season of planting seeds, watering them, and waiting for God to produce the growth. If you are compelled, please pray for God to stir students’ hearts to see their need for Him and Christian community. Please also pray for the students that have been coming around to grow strong as disciples and keep reaching out to others.

Primary/Secondary Education

We have continued working with staff and students at the Inayawan Nazarene Church & School. Laura teaches there at least once a week. Now that everyone is in class all day every day, she will start teaching grades 4-6 every week. She attended the monthly school chapel service this week. Students in chapel for grades 5 and 6 were thankful this year for many things – especially Google Meet, church techs, and the internet connection that allowed Pastor Medel and his wife to join from Bohol.

At the beginning of last month, we helped them prepare the new classrooms that were finished being rebuilt from typhoon damage. We cleaned bookshelves and technical equipment that had been in storage since the typhoon last December. While cleaning, we got to know some of the teachers we do not normally work with. Last Friday night, we visited the pop-up coffee kiosk at Inayawan Nazarene that is ran by two of their church members. We met up with one of the Street Level students that lives nearby and spent time with some of the church members, youth, and staff. The three of us will also join their church anniversary/holiday party this Sunday.

Lessons continue at Banawa Nazarene. Students in grade 4 recently finished up a four-week lesson series. During the last class, one student compared the friction ridge skin found on our hands and feet to that of the polar bear’s paws (she was in class when we talked about fingerprints this summer). Laura has also been teaching at least once a week at both the Wesleyan School and Southern Bethany.

Please continue to pray for the staff and students. Pray especially for the additional opportunities at Inayawan Nazarene. Pray that we would be a blessing to them as well.

November 22, 2022 The Children's Ministry

And Then There Were Four…

The number four seems to be a theme this fall in the Children’s Ministry!

Four Kids

As of September and the “graduating” of our upper elementary kids, Foundations has four children regularly attending. While the class size has decreased in number, it has not shrunk in enthusiasm! The change in dynamic has provided an opportunity for the remaining kids to step up and take on new challenges, such as reading Bible passages for the class.

Four Weeks / Four Practices

As I write this update, we only have four weeks and four practices remaining until this year’s Christmas Program! At the beginning of November, we joined forces with Believers Homeschool Group to begin practicing for the program. We have 11 kids (6 families) taking part! This year we will be performing a play called A Pondering Heart: Christmas Through the Eyes of Mary. The kids have been hard at work practicing lines and gathering costumes. We look forward to getting to share it with you on Wednesday, December 21 at 6:30 p.m. in the church sanctuary.

Fourth Quarter

We are also moving into our fourth quarter of curriculum in Foundations. Over the past few months, we have been learning about God’s justice and mercy through the prophets of the Old Testament. As we move into December, we will begin to see how God protects and restores His people with lessons on people like Daniel, Ezra, and Esther.

Four Requests

If you would like to join in praying for the Children’s Ministry, here are a few requests:

  1. For healthy kids so we are all able to gather together for Foundations and for practices
  2. That God would do exceedingly more than we could ask or think through the Christmas Program performance this year
  3. For wisdom in planning for the coming year
  4. For lasting fruit to come from this ministry
November 19, 2022 River Falls Ministry

We have had a lot of fun opportunities for fellowship and outreaches in River Falls over the last Month.

Outreaches

We brought the Blind Munchies Coffeehouse trailer to the River Falls CVTC and UW River Falls Campuses to give away coffee and cookies. This allowed us to invite students to Street Level and Believers Campus Church. It was the first time we set up at the CVTC. They let us set up outside the main entrance, and we interacted with many of the students and staff.

Street Level Ministries – UWRF

At the end of October, a few of the people in River Falls attended the greater Street Level Summit. We hopped in the church van and drove up to Duluth for a full and eventful weekend. The summit included a number of sessions focused on the life of Jonah in the Bible. This study led us to discuss God’s calling and direction in our lives. We also attended Believers City Church in Duluth that Sunday. And the weekend was completed by an outreach event on the University of Minnesota Duluth campus involving costume kickball. It was great to fellowship with the other locations.

Street Level River Falls continues to meet on Monday nights at the Blind Munchies Coffeehouse for a meal and Bible Study. We had a few extra laughs on Halloween. Since it was during one of our regular meeting times we decided to have a costume-friendly Bible study and game night.

Prayer and Looking Forward

Please continue to pray for:

-Fruit from the coffeehouse outreaches advertising Street Level Ministries and Believers Campus Church

-That God is at work in the hearts of the students, staff, and community on campus and in the city

-For future planning of outreach events for the coffeehouse

-That students would desire to get more involved and committed as part of a local community

November 13, 2022 Believers Church Duluth

Fall has been a full and exciting time for us in Duluth. On Sundays we’ve continued our journey through the book of Matthew in chapter 11. We’ve learned about dealing with doubt by studying how Jesus addressed John the Baptist when his confidence in Jesus was waning. No one doubts Jesus when things are going well, but we suddenly question His purposes when life becomes difficult. The antidote is to wait through suffering, look around at what He is doing, and learn not to be offended. Later in the chapter, Jesus had hard words for those who refused to repent of their sin by making excuses and blaming the messenger. When we’re born again, sin becomes repulsive, and those who truly know Christ will repent. On Wednesday evenings, we followed up with these subjects during our weekly rewinds, diving deeper into doubt and repentance in small group discussions.

We shook up our typical Wednesday rotation with some different material, which was both challenging and admonishing. We spent two Wednesdays watching a series of films about Richard and Sabina Wurmbrand, who were faithful Jewish-Romanian Christians during World War II. In “Tortured for Christ”, we followed along with Richard’s story of faithful evangelism and ministry to the Russians who had invaded his country and how he stood up to the religious leaders of his day who were compromising their faith because of government pressure. All of this landed him in prison, where he was subjected to torture, loneliness, and cruelty for years. After the film, we had a large group discussion, where we were challenged to evaluate our lives as soul-winners and the cost we will pay for the salvation of the lost. In the movie, “Sabina”, we saw the story of how both she and her husband came to faith, and the subsequent radical effect it had on their lives. They started by ministering to the people around them, their neighbors, whether they were pleasant people or not. God blessed their efforts, and many, even enemies, came to Christ. It was moving to see how their huge sacrifices and endurance later in life began through the small acts of faithfulness, hospitality, and love in their neighborhood.

We were blessed with beautiful weather all through October (the news said the last time it was this warm in the fall was 1903), and we took full advantage of it. Several of us headed down the street from the church to work on installing siding on one of our neighbors’ houses. We worked alongside the homeowner and his family and were able to get a significant amount of work done. It was a great way to connect with our neighbors because there’s nothing like working alongside others to build a deeper relationship.

On the same weekend, we were delighted to host the Street Level Summit up in the Northland, with all members of the campus ministries joining for a weekend of learning, fellowship, and… kickball. Pastor Tim was the guest speaker for the first evening at the church, and he spoke on having “an unfinished life”. The group spent the night and then did some more sessions at a local hostel in downtown Duluth. Pastor Justin taught the first of a two-part message at the church on a Saturday night and then followed up with the second message at church on Sunday. He spoke on the contrast between the kind of people who use God, and then the kind of people God uses. It was very encouraging to have our church full on Sunday; we’re such a small group, that being able to worship and fellowship with a larger body is such a joy, and it makes us long for Heaven when we will all be together.  After the Sunday message, the Street Level members headed to UM-Duluth for some costume kickball, in the spirit of the season.

On October 31st, we had an all-church Halloween costume party at the Street Level House. It had all the makings of a good time: food, games, guests, and trick-or-treaters.

November 10, 2022 Pastor Jesse Moss

Ballast is a material that is used to provide stability in many sea vessels. It is usually a heavy substance that is placed in tanks low in the vessel to prevent possible disaster, commonly counteracting the tendency of a tip-over and eventual shipwreck. The lack of proper ballast has been the primary cause of many tragedies at sea, some, such as the Sewol ferry in Korea cost the lives of over 300 people. The ballast provides much-needed stability when the waters become treacherous and seas seem insurmountable. It is critical for the lifetime of a ship and should not be overlooked by any sailors desiring a long and successful career.

What about us?

The storms of a life fiercely following the lead of Jesus are unavoidable. To go where He is leading necessitates that you pass through them. How can you be sure that you will make it through those storms without making a shipwreck of your faith? What is the ballast in your life that steadies it in the most tumultuous of situations? When you receive a tragic phone call, what keeps you going? When your emotions tell you that everyone around you is against you, how do you stay in the fight?

Improper Ballast

Filling ballast tanks with the wrong substance does nothing good for the ship. In fact, the wrong ballast can actually achieve the opposite of the desired result, instead of leading to stability, it can induce weakness and vulnerability. Sometimes we cram our lives with things thinking they are going to give us what we need. We fill our life with unhealthy relationships, passions, and desires and then we act surprised when those things cause more problems than they are worth. They don’t enhance our life, but instead pull us beneath the surface.

Finding the right Ballast

We must be careful to not expect our emotions to carry us through rough times. Neither can we always count on the relationships that we have around us, even the best of them. Our stability cannot come from ourselves. Instead, our stability must come from the Lord.

He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure. Psalm 40:2

We need to fill our tanks with ballast that comes from God: the reliability that comes from the truth of His word, the peace that is experienced from the love that He has, and the hope for eternity from the promises that He has given. Anything else that we look to for stability in life will eventually shift beneath us.

The storms are coming, make sure your tanks are full.
