Why American Children Stopped Believing in God by Cameron Hilditch

There is no doubt that our society is becoming more and more secular. Why this is occurring is something that many people may want to debate. Some would say that more education is simply causing people to have less belief in God. Research seems to point to something else. In the article below the argument is made, based on research, that more education has never made people less religious. What has made people less religious, and more secular, is our education system itself and the secular ideology that it promotes.

This quote from the article sums this up nicely:

Children learn more at school than reading, writing, and arithmetic. They imbibe a whole set of implied assumptions about what’s important in life. By excluding religious instruction from public schools, the government-run education system tacitly teaches students that religious commitments are not a first-order priority in life. Faith in God becomes a sort of optional weekend hobby akin to playing tennis or video games.

It is worth noting that the above quote is true regardless of how secular the school is. Many public schools may not be teaching anything that seems blatantly anti-Biblical.  However, they are teaching kids what is important and what their focus in life should be. For many of us the answer to this issue is to take control of our children’s education by educating them at home.  Read the article and consider what it says about the importance of our children’s education.

December 25, 2020 Shofar Missions Cebu

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Cebu City! Keep reading for the latest update from Shofar Mission.

What a month (and year) it has been! Things are starting to slow down a little bit… at least for semester break. It’s the perfect time to reflect on all that God has done this year and ask Him for direction entering into 2021. It has been a wild and crazy ride, hasn’t it? We’d do it all over again (yes, lockdowns and face shields included).

Street Level Ministries

It would be easy to get discouraged by the things we couldn’t do this semester – in-person meetings, campus events, street outreach, random hangouts, etc. However, God has been really good; there’s much to thank Him for. By getting students away from each other and alone, God brought much clarity to each of them. At our virtual Christmas party, a few of them said they were thankful for COVID because they had to be alone with God. There were a lot of “aha” moments during lockdown!

Members have the opportunity to volunteer for Word on the Street Magazine or Street Level Radio. Three students have been volunteering for WOTS. 1,000 copies of Issue 84 were printed; 600 copies were sent to the University of the Visayas students who are doing modular learning from their homes. Two students have been volunteering for SLR and helping with the production of teaching clips. We’ve also been meeting with three ladies every Saturday for a digital small group where we read and discuss discipleship material. It is a privilege to serve the Lord and watch these students grow. We covet your prayers for them individually and for the ministry as a whole.

Exploring Creation Science

Despite not being able to teach classes in person, this branch of Shofar Mission has expanded in very creative ways! Students have joined classes online via Facebook Live or Zoom. New lessons and experiments are continually being developed; old lessons will come back into session next semester (for students who haven’t had them yet). As we end the semester, students in grades 6 & 12 will have an opportunity to discuss how their beliefs in science may be challenged as they move on to higher education or a different school setting.

Explore Booklets were sent to schools to distribute to their students and a second booklet was recently printed. Teachers can access science creation materials on the virtual library and students have access to Daily Bible Readings online. We are continually praying that the seeds that are planted through this ministry will grow in young students’ minds… to know why they believe what they believe. It has been a neat way to serve alongside pastors, principals, and school staff as they continue to plan and prepare plans that include a trial run for the “new normal” in education for the foreseeable future early next semester.

Shofar Cable TV

We were disappointed that the teams that had planned to come this year couldn’t. We didn’t host youth retreats, Ministry Training Institute classes, or children’s outreaches like normal. However, when God closes one door (or at least puts things on pause), He opens other doors. This year, He allowed us to expand Shofar Cable TV to the east side of Cebu Island on Cebu Cable channel 187. Our broadcasting in Metro Cebu reaches Argao, Sibonga, Carcar, Naga, Minglanilla, Talisay City, Cebu City, Mandaue City, and Consolacion. For the past 8 years, we’ve been broadcasting on the west side of the island in Balamban and Asturias through ATD Community Cable Vision Inc. Wonder what’s next for Shofar TV? Bogo City and Bantayan in the north, perhaps? We’ll see what God does next…

Church Campground

Seasonal transitions, doesn’t that sound “festive”? That’s a fancy way of saying that there are always things to do here in the good old Midwest. It is now officially winter and in my opinion it can be one of the best seasons of the year. The air is crisp, clean, and the stars and moon shine brightly on a clear night.  Lately Nehemiah has been getting the church campground ready for the upcoming winter months. We have been busy adding new tarps to the pavilion walls. Then we sealed up all the gaps to help hold in the heat and cut down on those pesky drafts. We installed a new wood stove and two ceiling fans to circulate the heat. We are building a shelter for the generator in order to operate and store it in one place. It’s really starting to take shape and is quickly turning into a blessing we can utilize year-round.

Other recent projects

Nehemiah has also been working on tuck pointing around the church building. It is a job that seems to easily keep us occupied because there is so much of it to do. We have focused on some key areas up on the top of the bell tower. We have also tuck pointed on the ground level by the back steps. Oh yea, some areas up on a ladder around the radio room have seen some attention too. Then there was weatherizing the church which involves swapping out windows, air conditioner units, insulating, and draining our sprinkler system. Exciting tasks all necessary to keep the building in working order. We also installed solar lights on a new JFB billboard just outside of Connorsville. It really catches the eye!

Next year’s plans

This upcoming year has plenty-o-projects in store for Nehemiah to tackle as well. Cement pads, more campground work, and retaining wall repairs, just to mention a few. We are thankful that God has not only provided us with projects to accomplish but a group of brothers who meet each week to see these these through. Thank you for giving Nehemiah the privileges’ to serve our church body in this way. We always appreciate your prayers. It’s by God’s goodness alone that we are able to not only “be” but “do” the specific handyman-type work He has for us.

In Closing

Do you recognize the building on the title picture? It’s what the current Street Level house looked like roughly 100 years ago when it was a church. Check out that sweet horse and buggy, and boy that steeple was magnificent wasn’t it? But we all know, it’s not about the steeple, it’s about the people!

College Ministry Fellowship

Recently, our college group finished out the semester with a fellowship night. While the 1990 classic “Home Alone” played in the background, everyone participated in an ornament-making challenge. Our ornament theme was felt. Although the quality of product varied widely, we all had a good time hanging out. Also, participants were awarded in categories such as, “Most Likely to Inspire Holiday Cheer” and “Pinterest Fail”.

Micro-Groups

We recently began meeting in small, focused fellowship groups with some of the regular participants in the ministry. We intend these “micro groups” to offer further fellowship and discuss real-life application of our faith. Currently, we are running “young men” and “young women” groups. We expect topics and group composition may change over time.

Prayer Requests…

  • That we have continued opportunities through the holidays and while school is off in January.
  • Pray for our “micro groups”
  • Pray for continued direction as a ministry as we go into a new year.

American’s have been in “pursuit of happiness” ever since 1776. Christians have been tracking it even longer. From the Garden of Eden to the Shores of America (and every place in between), mankind has always been dominated by a concern to be happy.

Everybody Wants To Be Happy…

Blaise Pascal (1600’s; French Mathematician) recognized this universal hunger for happiness long before American’s declared their intent to pursue it: “All men seek happiness” he wrote, “This is without exception. Whatever different means they employ, they all tend to this end. The cause of some going to war, and of others avoiding it, is the same desire in both, attended with different views. The will never takes the least step but to this object. This is the motive of every action of every man, even of those who hang themselves”.

Whether a person goes to war, like Josiah did (II Chr.35:20-23), stays home from it like King David (II Sam 11:1), or hangs himself like Judas Iscariot (Mt.27:5), the desire is the same. Adam thought he could find happiness in a wife; Eve thought she could find it in a fruit. The entire human race has been chasing happiness since the beginning, and we’re still in hot pursuit of it, even now. Pursuing happiness is one thing; finding it is another.

In 1987, Irish rock band U2 released a song that would eventually become one of the “greatest tracks of all time”. In it, front man Bono speaks for most of us when he sings, “I still haven’t found what I’m looking for”.

Only Some People Want To Be Holy…

Unlike happiness, holiness isn’t as popular among earthlings. Isn’t it noteworthy that Blaise Pascal never said the same thing about holiness that he did about happiness? That’s because, on the whole, people concern themselves far more with being happy than they do with being holy. Judas, for example, sacrificed his very life to be happy, but wouldn’t pay 30 pieces of silver when it came to being holy.

Would it help to know that your happiness has everything to do with your holiness? John Phillips wrote, “Happiness and holiness always go hand in hand, and the reason we see so little genuine happiness among men is because there’s so little holiness”.

As citizens of an otherworldly Kingdom, however, pursuing holiness is what’s expected of us. Our King, in fact, told us to “Be holy, as I am holy”. We’re missing the mark entirely if we let ourselves pursue happiness apart from holiness. God withholds joy from those with no interest in being like Him.

Pursuing Either, Finding Neither…

While some never find happiness in spite of their reckless pursuit of it, there are others who have given up the chase altogether. They’re more interested in holiness. Some Christians are in such hot pursuit of piety that they just don’t care anymore whether they’re happy or not. They pursue sanctity with all the vim & vigor as the world pursues happiness. Only, instead of pursuing happiness to the neglect of holiness, they pursue holiness at the expense of happiness.

Asceticism finds its way into the church just as easily as Hedonism does. They just come in through different doors. But they’re equally capable of leaving their victims feeling hopeless.

Maybe that’s why Bono’s been singing the same thing for the last 33 years.

Following Jesus, Finding Both…

It hardly matters whether we’re pursuing happiness at the expense of holiness, or vice versa, the problem is always the same: We’re focused on ourselves rather than on the One who holds the keys to our deepest desires. Jesus’ followers won’t get what they want out of life by pursing them, but by following Him. All other pursuits (including happiness or holiness) are going to tire you out eventually. Only those who exhaust themselves in the pursuit of Jesus Himself will truly know what it means to rest.

Once we stop following Christ to pursue something else, we’re bound to get lost. And we’ll end up with neither happiness nor holiness. Those who faithfully pursue Him, however, will one day be rewarded with both, according to His promise: “Happy and holy is the one who shares in the first resurrection!” (Rev.20:6).

Have You Still Not Found What You’re Looking For?

So what, exactly, are you looking for? Are you pursuing happiness to the neglect of holiness, or holiness at the expense of happiness? Some people will spend their whole lives chasing these things. Others will die in their pursuit of them. But everybody, without exception wants something out of life, and that includes you.

A Choice lies before you: Either waste your life or live with risk

Either sit on the sidelines or get in the game. After all, life was no cakewalk for Jesus, and he didn’t promise it would be any easier for his followers. We shouldn’t be surprised by resistance and persecution. Yet most of us play it safe. We pursue comfort. We spend ourselves to get more stuff. And we prefer to be entertained.

We are all tempted by the idea of security, the possibility of a cozy Christianity with no hell at the end. But what kind of life is that really? It’s a far cry from adventurous and abundant, from truly rich and really full, and it’s certainly not the heights and the depths Jesus calls us to.

Discover in these pages a foundation for fearlessness. Hear God’s promise to go with you into the unknown. And let Risk Is Right help you see the joys of a faith-filled and seriously rewarding life of Jesus-dependent abandon!
