September 25, 2019 Shofar Missions Cebu

Read about what God has been doing through Shofar Mission in the Philippines.

A Look Back…..

Since October is right around the corner, I cannot help but be reminded it is almost three years since our preparations to move to the Philippines to plant Street Level Ministries Cebu and continue publishing Word On the Street Magazine began and what a ride it has been.

Philippines, River Falls, and Menomonie WOTS Crew

It all began with a Bible study. When we arrived in Cebu, we began looking for a location to have a weekly Bible study while waiting to hear back from a university where we presented Street Level Ministries. In the meantime, we found a coffeehouse to meet at and began co-teaching a Bible study every Tuesday evening. We stepped into editing and writing for Word On the Street and started passing out the ‘zine to students outside university campuses.

After we were unable to meet on campus at two other universities, we decided it was time for a new approach. We planned a recruitment gathering using Word on the Street as our advertisement. After setting a date and printing 700 copies of the issue, we hit the streets to get the word out. Three students from the University of the Visayas attended and Street Level Ministries began. We started meeting at Elicon House for a weekly dinner and Bible study. Street Level Radio was also installed in February of 2018 at two locations. In June of 2018 we held our first Street Level Radio Live Broadcast.

July 2017 SLM Recruitment Gathering

In November of 2017, the first Shofar Creation Science class was taught. Preparations for this branch of Shofar Mission began in June of 2017 with curriculum development. We decided the science class would be every Wednesday. Lessons were taught at two different schools alternating weeks and once per month at another school on Friday. The February 2018 team was also able to attend a lesson.

We Have Much To Be Thankful For

In June of 2019, God provided an office space to serve as the headquarters for Street Level Ministries. This has allowed for two meeting times per week so the students can choose the time that fits their schedule. The office also allows for one-on-one meetings to take place and a chance to go through a book together with a student. We also started Street Level membership, which gives students the option to volunteer in either Street Level Radio or Word on the Street Magazine. Most recently, we were approved to be an official organization at the University of the Visayas. In light of this, we will be participating in Intramurals and having a recruitment gathering for UV students to learn more about Street Level Ministries.

Street Level Radio Live Broadcast

We had an opportunity to work with three new schools and maintain a teaching schedule at two others teaching Shofar Creation Science lessons during the 2018-2019 school year. Our schedule also allowed for classes to be offered twice a week. In June, a new name and logo were designed. The July 2019 team was able to attend a couple of lessons and engage with the students. At this time, information is being presented to public school staff offering the lessons to their schools.

August 2019 Exploring Creation Science class

We have also had the opportunity to prepare the way for missions teams to come over, like Shofar Camp and Ministry Training Institute classes.

It is neat to look back at all that God has allowed us to be a part of! It is also times like these that I am reminded, “Never forget where you came from!”

The Radio – Out and About This Summer

This summer the Radio ministry was able to spend some time getting out into the community doing remote broadcasts – which has been both challenging – and very very fun. As we grow as servants in the church and ministry we are learning as a group how to serve in the radio better and stronger. It seems we are also growing in unity as God continues to change us as individuals. Please pray for us to be good servants – in order to serve both the church and Street Level.

Daily Devotions on the Radio

This summer (spring really) we started our Daily Devotions Project, with Pastor Tim. You can hear the devotions on our station Monday – Friday in the morning AND night. You can also subscribe to a podcast for these at this URL: jfbelievers.com/community_blogs/podcast/

These are ALSO being played in the Philippines on Street Level Radio every weekday. Pray for these that they bring fruit to the listeners, and that we are able to see that fruit!

Remote Radio Broadcasts with Street Level

Tomorrow night we are going to be doing our first remote broadcast at Stout with the Blind Munchies, WOTS, and Street Level as a way to reach out to the students. Our goal is to be a single front – representing Street Level. Pray for us that we have creative ideas as we start into this semester. As our campaign for the semester shows, we want to be able to communicate as a station that we are Christian, and that Jesus loves music. So as you pray for us, keep that in mind! We want to be able to display that God is creative and cares for excellence in art and music.

We will be doing outreaches like this through the year – so pray for us as we continue to grow in unity and reach out together to the students.

Read All About It

We have also kicked off a project that we are really excited about. Believers’ Community News. This is a Christian news broadcast that is in its beginning stages. Here’s the skinny:

We are using various sources to get a quick 3-4 article news segment – and currently Pastor Tom is compiling and recording the audio into weekly Christian news.

This is really exciting because ….as it turns out – nobody is really doing this well. So listen in daily for this news and if you have good articles, well just keep them to yourself because Tom’s pretty good at finding them! 🙂

But please PRAY for this so that we can keep doing this and do it better. It would be nice to make it into a podcast….someday! We will see!

What’s Playing Now

Just a note that if you are listening to the station and ever wonder….hey, what’s that song? You can visit our website (burningdogradio.com) and see what is playing under “Currently Playing”.

Street Level Begins Again

Street Level has begun again in River Falls. This has meant for a busy few weeks of ministry, a steady diet of prayer, and the ability to see God do his work. We’ve had involvement fairs, various information tables, mobile coffee cart outreaches, bonfires on campus all in prayerful intent of meeting students that God may be bringing our way. We have been thankful to see some of these efforts being used to bring about conversations with students about school, life, and God. There has been a lot of interest in Street Level this year, not just from new freshman, but from people who have been around awhile and have heard about us.

Our weekly Bible study is back on track Tuesday nights, and for the first two meetings, we had a full house of interested people. We started this semester off with a video-driven discussion that asks questions about the nature of life then and seeks to answer those questions via scripture. There was a good discussion and seems to be several people who are “thinking things through” in relation to scripture. We will be flip-flopping these video discussions with a short study in the book of Joshua looking at what it means to step forward in obedience to God.

Coffeehouse Continued

The coffeehouse has been open for over a month now. We had “extended hours” for the first two weeks of school and had the opportunity to meet a lot of new people from the community and campus. Many are curious about who we are and we’ve had many discussion about our history and Menomonie origins. Some students have already become “regulars” who have their favorite drinks and use it as a study spot. We’re glad to see the place getting used so much these days, and look forward to what opportunities God may use it for.

Prayer

Please pray for:

  • The connections and opportunities with new students.
  • The students who desire to step forward to be a member of Street Level.
  • The coffeehouse and our interactions with people who stop in.

Street Level Weekly Meetings

Street Level Ministries at UW-Stout has resumed it’s campus activities with the return of students for the Fall, 2019 semester! This fall we continue to meet every Monday at 6pm for a free dinner followed by a Bible study at 7pm. This happens at the Street Level house, which is located behind Jarvis Hall. (1009 6th St E)

Getting The Ball Rolling…

In the month of September while the weather is still good and the college students aren’t overloaded with homework (yet), we have a handful of outreach events planned.

A few outreach events are already in the books. We had our inaugural Labor Day thrift & plant sale a few weeks ago. Many UW Stout students are now the proud owners of a new responsibility: a dorm plant. The sale gave us a great chance to meet our neighbors and fund raise for a future Street Level mission trip.

This past weekend we survived tubing the frigid waters of the Red Cedar River. Most of the small band of Street Levelers entered the flood stage boat landing as naive young adults, and all exited an hour later with lower core body temperatures. But we still took time for a took a quick photo and then drove back to the Street Level House for some BBQ chicken.

What’s Coming Up Next?

The next few weeks we will host Friday night Garden Parties at the Street Level House. We hang out, eat, ping pong, and have something of a main event like a movie or some live music. Along the way we will also be on campus to give away free coffee from the Blind Munchie Coffeehouse as well as set up on campus with Burning Dog Radio and Word on the Street Magazine.

Plenty of Opportunities to Belong!

We have also begun signing up new members for the semester. This is open to any college student looking for opportunities to get involved in Street Level and serve God in one of the above mentioned outreach ministries. We ask each new member to commit themselves to being invested for one semester at a time in a weekly service position and all the regular happenings of Street Level.

Street Level mixes it up during the first dinner & bible study of the semester.

So far we’ve seen a really good mix of new and familiar faces. Please pray that God continues sending people to our meetings and events, and that he gives those people the desire to get involved in His kingdom work!

You can find out more information about who we are and what we are up to on our website.

September 14, 2019 Pastor Jesse Moss | Duluth

When walking on a college campus you are met with a barrage of advertisements. They try to get you to attend an event, join some club, or to make a moral stand. There are tables upon tables of people giving out information. There is poster after poster, all of which would lead you to believe that the message on it is more important than the hundreds of other posters surrounding it. With so many groups vying for attention what are we to do? How can we make sure that our message is also being heard? What can we do to stand out? The message of the truth of Jesus is important, it is real, and it matters; far more than the knitting club or the BBQ club and yet it seems that sometimes nothing we do will get the attention that we might desire.

Shouting Above the Noise

We have never hidden the fact that as a church we seek to invest in our local campuses. We want to reach students with the truth of God. If we can reach students now, at the start of this year, the start of their college career, the start of their adult life, there is no telling what incredible things God will do both in and through these individuals. There is no doubt that the potential is great. These students are going to find community, invest their time, energy, and resources, and pursue dreams. The question is where? Will what they seek be found only in the temporal activities that the university and culture around them has to offer? Or will they find real community, invest deeply, and pursue fulfillment in the kingdom of God?  What can a little group like ours do to encourage the latter?

So far we have set up tables at three different college campuses, given away coffee and Street Level information to as many as possible. We have attended student org fairs and welcome week activities. We released the newest issue of Word on the Street Magazine. We had our first weekly meeting as well as hosted a well-attended canoe trip. We have had bonfires where we gave away hot chocolate and apple cider. The start of the semester has been a busy one. It’s been a lot of fun. And many of these things were good. Many we will continue to do in the future, as well as continually seeking new ways to meet and talk with students. They are all important and we should seek to do them with excellence. But none of them are the answer.

What is the Answer?

Last Monday we had our first Bible Study of the semester. At it we talked about how we cannot rely on our past experiences with God, we cannot assume that because something worked once it will again. Instead God desires us to continually seek and know Him. And that is what I want for Street Level this semester. I want us to be a people that are marked with the presence of God. I’d like to strive to be a group that is close to God, that knows Him, and that desires Him above outward success, attendance, and notoriety. If that is true of us, I have no doubt that God will do a great work both in us and through us.

September 10, 2019 Pastor Justin Thomson - Duluth

I have dwarves on my lawn. Three of them, and they’re all from the same family. One of them was born in Wright County, MN, while the other two (believe it or not) are grandchildren of the Duchess of Oldenburg. They came up on a truck from Missouri shortly after we moved in 10 years ago, and they’ve been living in my yard ever since. Not to be confused with the average, lifeless garden gnome either, mine are alive & real and full of fruit. And, as of late, they’re making me nervous.

Malus Pumila from the Rosaceae family, otherwise known as “Honeycrisp”, the three apple trees in my backyard are of what’s called a “dwarf” variety. Topping out at 8-10 feet tall, these dwarves will never grow to be as large as some of their relatives within the greater Rosaceae family, but they’re perfectly suited to occupy a small yard like mine (which they do, and have, for many years now). They may be small, but they’ve weathered many storms and survived some of the coldest winters on record. They came in the mail no bigger than twigs, but they’ve long since grown into strong young trees, eager to provide my family with applesauce and pie. These are no ordinary dwarves. The Duchess of Oldenburg would be proud.

Slow Growing

As strong as they are, and as proud as the Duchess may be, these dwarf trees haven’t yet reached their full potential. Over the duration of their life in my yard, I’ve seen very little fruit. One of them just last year yielded its first (and only) apple, while another had yet to produce even a single blossom. It almost goes without saying that I haven’t been eating a lot of pie in recent years. However, I hadn’t necessarily been expecting a whole lot of fruit from them either. I know that it takes time for a fruit tree to mature, and I’ve been willing to wait. My dwarves haven’t disappointed me in the least. On the contrary, I am delighted to have them in my yard…apples or not.

In fact, at the start of prior seasons I remember pinching blossoms off of my trees in order to give the branches time to grow & thicken. Apples get heavy, and producing fruit too soon can break the limbs and prove counterproductive. Dwarf trees are known for doing this, and I didn’t want that to happen with mine. Better to make sure the tree is strong enough to handle the fruit it produces, rather than producing fruit as fast as possible to the detriment of the tree. I’m not hoping for apples this year only. I’m after fruit that lasts season after season.

Full of Potential

Well, this year has proven to be different from the rest. In mid-June all three trees were so filled with white apple blossoms, it looked like it had snowed on them. Pinching them off would’ve taken a month, so I figured that it was time to let my little dwarves do what they were always meant to do: Make fruit.

It wasn’t long before their blossoms gave way to tiny green apples. Those apples went from tiny to small, then from small to medium, and by mid-summer they had become substantial in both size and weight. The Thomson’s and the Rosaceae’s alike had been waiting a long time for this. It was exciting for all of us.

It’s now late summer, and my trees have had a year like none before. They are liberally decorated with the finest fruit they have ever produced. The apples they hold are healthy & beautiful, absolutely delicious, and simply too many to count. And with the end of the growing season still several weeks away, they’re bound to grow even larger, juicier, and, of course, heavier. And that is the cause of my recent concern.

“Producing fruit too soon can break the limbs”

The fruit I’ve so patiently waited for has now become the very thing that’s making me nervous. The branches are still relatively thin, and bowing like wooden rainbows with the weight of the apples. Can they handle it? Will they break? Is it possible for a tree be ruined by its own fruit?

Self-Destruction

The three trees in my yard make me wonder if we sometimes underestimate the value and importance of a fruitless season in our spiritual life. It’s a good thing I barred them from bearing too much fruit in years past, they can hardly carry the weight of the apples they’ve got now! Those dwarves, just like us, need to recognize spiritual maturity as being equally critical to the ongoing success of our ministry as the fruit we covet.

We’re so easily discouraged when the growth of our church stagnates for too long, or when our efforts to reach the lost fail to produce immediate results. But how can we be sure that periods of barrenness aren’t by God’s design? What if slow growth and scant success is God’s way of keeping us from destroying ourselves? Just because we can’t see any fruit doesn’t mean that the tree has died. It’s more likely an indication that its best years are still to come.

Conversely, even when a ministry seems to be producing volumes, it’s still susceptible to breakage. Some churches have been known to do that, and I don’t want it to happen to mine. I’ve looked over the fence into neighboring orchards that were far more prolific than ours, and what I’ve seen isn’t always a pretty sight. I’ve seen ministries that grew up so quickly and produced fruit so fast that the ministry itself crumbled under the weight of it. It came and went like a boom town, and all that’s left to show for it now are a few scattered apple cores. Overnight success is sometimes the worst thing that could happen to an organization. Let’s be careful what we wish for, and content with what we have.

Small but Strong

Our church is what many would consider a “dwarf” variety. We’re one of the small ones. We’ll never get too big, and we don’t grow very fast, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t capable of producing fruit. Indeed, producing fruit is what we are meant to do, and I believe that we already are in some measure. We’re certainly not dead. However, if our sole focus is on the production of spiritual fruit, we might be in big trouble. If the branch itself doesn’t have enough integrity, the weight of the fruit is going to destroy us.

“Is it possible for a tree to be ruined by its own fruit?”

Being a relatively young church, we might feel discouraged when we look back across our own branches and see so few apples dangling from them. It’s easy to get frustrated at how long it can take for a ministry to gain some traction. But I can assure you, God is not disappointed in what He’s getting from our little fellowship. The last decade might feel like a long time to us, but God’s in no hurry for gobs of fruit. Not like we are anyway. If anybody’s getting impatient, it’s us.

If God would’ve allowed us to produce the all the fruit we’ve ever wanted, especially early on, we’d be broken to bits by now (it certainly wouldn’t have been the first time fruit got somebody in trouble with God). But He didn’t let that happen to us, with good reason. He’s spent the last 10 years keeping us safe from ourselves and making us stronger in the meantime, preparing us for what’s to come. And I believe that He is pleased with the growth He sees, and that our best years are still to come. We owe God our sincere thanks for pinching off our blossoms in times past.

Branches Full of Blossoms

With the startup of campus ministry upon us, and a new year looming just ahead, the JFB community is entering into an exciting new season of ministry with a lot of potential. We have high hopes. We see branches full of blossoms, and like every year, we’re starting to ask the same questions: “Will it work? Is this the year? Will we finally bear a substantial amount of fruit?” But these are the wrong questions to be asking. Rather than concerning ourselves with whether we’ll produce fruit or not, we ought to be concerned with whether we could handle it if we did.

This might be the year. But are we ready? Maybe we’re ready, maybe we’re not. Perhaps we’ll enter into a season of great fruitfulness. But can we handle it? Maybe so, but it’s equally possible that the Lord’s decided we need another year to thicken. Either way we’re in good hands. God knows exactly what we need to survive the cruelest of seasons and weather the worst of storms. We’ve been through plenty of it already, and we’re still alive. If we don’t see fruit today, we will tomorrow…Jesus promised, “I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit”.

Keep Going, Keep Growing

whether it’s a fruitful year for us or another barren one, progress is being made here. The future looks good for us, and the Lord is pleased with us and our dwarf church.

As far as the Rosaceae family is concerned, I might need to go and rescue them from doing permanent damage to themselves. It’s been raining all day, and they’re drooping like crazy. Looks like the Thomson’s will be having pie pretty soon.
